哈尔滨工业大学英语专业成立于1985年,是国内首批建立的理工院校英语专业。1985年开始招收英语专业研究生,1988年开始招收英语专业本科生(文、理科考生兼招)。从1992年起,在全国率先开始英语双学位(英语为第二学位)的培养。1996年获得“外国语言学与应用语言学”硕士学位授予权。2005年获得“英语语言文学”硕士学位授予权。2006年英语专业教研室发展为英语系。2011年开始招收“英语—机械设计制造及其自动化”双学位(理科)本科生。2012年开始招收“翻译专业”硕士学位研究生。   

 英语系下设英语专业教研室和德法教研室。英语专业教研室现有教师24人,其中省级、校级教学名师1人;校级教学带头人2人;省级教学新秀2人,校级教学新秀3人;校级教学能手2人;教授8人,副教授11人,讲师5人;硕士生导师14人;具有博士学位教师14人;21人有国外留学经历。英语专业教研室常年聘请外籍教师3至4人。德法教研室承担英语专业学生第二外语课程的教学任务,共有教师5人,其中副教授1人,讲师4人;博士1人,硕士2人;4人有国外留学经历。    

英语专业教师主要从事理论语言学、应用语言学、认知语言学、语用学、英国文学、美国文学、加拿大文学、跨文化交际学、翻译等学科研究,并在这些学科领域形成了比较稳定的学术梯队。2006年至今,出版专著7部;教材、教辅用书20余部;在国内外公开发表论文200多篇;主持、参与科研项目30余项,其中国家级项目8项,省部级项目12项;获省级教学、科研成果奖33项,校级教学、科研成果奖15项。“英语文学”课程被评为黑龙江省精品课程,“英语文学”、“泛读”和“精读(基础英语)”、“听力”课程被评为哈工大优秀课程。    

英语系定位于培养有优良的思想道德修养、健全人格、成熟的思维能力和开拓性的创新能力,具有通识知识及自我完善意识,具有坚实的英语语言基本功、系统的语言、文学、文化及相关人文科学或自然科学知识,具有全球意识及跨文化交际能力,能熟练地运用所学专业知识和所掌握的专业技能在外事、教育、经贸、文化、科技等部门从事翻译、教学、研究、管理等实践工作的优秀英语专业人才。在过去的二十多年里,英语系已培养研究生(含研究生班)500余人本科生1000多双学位学生200多人。现每年招收硕士研究生30余人,本科生40人英语专业学生还可以辅修其他专业或攻读双学位。2008年英语专业在全国英语专业评估中获得优秀。2011年英语专业获批黑龙江省重点专业并荣获“哈尔滨工业大学教学先进单位”称号。

英语系应届毕业生保研比率约为20%攻读研究生的比率达30%左右。读研的学生中一部分学生保送到本校及复旦大学、上海交通大学、南京大学、南开大学、西安交通大学、大连理工大学等其他高校攻读本专业研究生一部分考取了香港中文大学、香港理工大学、北京大学、清华大学、北京外国语大学、上海外国语大学、广州外语外贸大学、复旦大学、南开大学、中国社会科学院等国内重点院校本专业和跨专业的研究生,还有一部分学生留学海外到英国伯明翰大学、曼彻斯特大学、巴斯大学、伦敦国王学院、莱斯特大学、纽卡斯尔大学、美国马里兰州立大学、爱荷华州立大学等国内外大学继续深造

近几年,英语系学生在“外研社”杯全国英语演讲比赛、“21世纪杯大学生英语演讲比赛、21世纪“港澳之星”全国英语演讲大赛、“外研社”杯全国英语辩论赛、全国大学生英语翻译竞赛、“外研社”杯全国英语写作比赛、模拟联合国、莎剧表演等各级竞赛中获得奖项50余项学生发表论文和译作34篇。英语系开展和组织了各种具有专业特色的学生活动,如“外文之声”学生语言文化艺术节、学生体育节、“外研社杯和“21世纪”杯英语演讲大赛(预选赛)及具有专业特色的寒暑期社会实践等活动,为每一位学子素质提高、能力发展提供了广阔空间。英语系定期主办大型国际学术会议,并聘请国内外资深专家和学者来校讲学。2006年至今,英语系邀请了国内外专家到学校讲学20余人次,分别涉及语言、文学、文化、演讲、翻译、教育哲学、测试、科研方法、网络教学等领域的内容。


   In the English Department, there are two basic units: The English Teaching  and Research Office, and German & French Teaching and Research Office, with  a total of 29 faculties. There are 23 members in The English Major Teaching and  Research Office, of whom one was entitled the Distinguished Teacher of  Heilongjiang Province, and two Academic Leaders in Teaching. There are seven  professors, ten associate professors and six lecturers, of whom 13 master  supervisors, 15 with Ph.Ds and eight with mater degrees. All teachers have  overseas experiences and those under 35 years old hold a master degree. The  German and French Teaching and Research Office consists of six teachers in  charge of the teaching of English major students, with one associate professor  and five lecturers. One faculty has a Ph.D and the rest of them have master  degrees. Four have overseas learning and research experiences. English  Department emloys four-five foreign teachers each year to offer speaking,  writing and other content courses.

The faculties of English Major dedicate themselves to the studies of  Theoretical Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Pragmatics,  British Literature, American Literature, Canadian Literature, Intercultural  Communication and Translation studies, and have formed relatively stable  academic teams in these disciplines. Since 2006, nine monographs, more than 30  textbooks and supplementary books and over 200 articles and papers have been  published at home and abroad. More than 40 research projects have been  conducted, of which two sponsored by National Planning Office of Philosophy and  Social Science, one by the Department of Higher Education and the rest by  Heilongjiang Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Science, Education  Department of Heilongjiang Province and Harbin Institute of Technology. 14  faculties won Provincial Teaching and Research Awards and 13 won HIT Teaching  and Research Awards. The course of English Literature is a Heilongjiang  Provincial Select Course, and the courses of the English Literature, Extensive  Reading and Intensive Reading (Basic English) were awarded Outstanding Courses  of Harbin Institute of Technology.

    The English Department is dedicated to cultivating English major students  and students studying English as a second major into all-round talents in  English with a firm foundation, systematic knowledge, and practical expertise.  The English Department has cultivated more than 800 graduate students, 1000  undergraduates and 200 double-major undergraduates over the past 30 years. The  English graduates are well-received in all walks of life, including education,  press and publication, foreign affairs, economy and trade, etc., occupying  positions as senior managers and professional technicians, etc. In addition,  about 30% of the English undergraduates pursued their further study for master  degrees, in such national leading universities as Peking University, Tsinghua  University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Shanghai International Studies  University, Guangdong Foreign Studies University, Fudan Univesity, Nankai  University and Chinese Academy of Sciences. Every year, about 30 graduate  students and 40 undergraduate students enroll to study in the English  Department. Courses for English majors are specified into three areas: English  language skills, English disciplinary knowledge and other relative knowledge,  all of which are conducted in English. English major students are also  encouraged to take courses in other schools and departments or study for a  second degree. The English department has achieved an excellent result in TEM  (Test for English Majors) Band 4 and 8.

    In recent years, the English major students in the School of Foreign  Languages have taken active part in competitions such as FLTRP Cup English  Public Speaking Contest, FLTRP Cup English Writing Contest, FLTRP Cup National  Debate Tournament, 21st Century National English Speech Contest, and National  College English Translation Contest. They won four national awards with four  second prizes and one third prize, and another ten provincial awards in  competitions of FLTRP Cup English Public Speaking Contest (Heilongjiang), 21st  Century Cup National English Speech Contest and Harbin Beer Cup English Speech  Contest. The department has organized all kinds of major-related extracurricular  activities for students, such as “Voice of Foreign Languages” Students Art  Festival, Students Sports Festival, FLTRP Cup English Public Speaking Contest  (HIT) and Summer & Winter Social Practices, offering a wide platform for  English majors to cultivate themselves and develop comprehensive competence.  

    Several international conferences have been hosted by the English  Department, and a number of senior experts and scholars have been invited to  give lectures in HIT. Since 2006, over 40 lectures have been delivered by  scholars both at home and abroad invited by the English Department, in such  areas as language, literature, culture, public speaking, translation,  educational philosophy, testing, research methods and internet-based teaching.  In a cooperative atmosphere created by HIT International Affairs Office, the  English Department has conducted cooperative research and teacher and student  exchanges with well-known domestic and international universities. Cooperative  relationship has been established between English Department and universities as  Trinity Western Univeristy (Canada), University of Massachusetts at Amherst  (U.S.A), University of Winnipeg (Canada), Nanyang Technological University  (Singapore), Dordt College (U.S.A), Korean University and Hanyang University  (Korea).
